Twelve years after he ruled the world with “Titanic”, Oscar-winning director James Cameron brought his lavish and extraordinary AVATAR to London for its World Premiere, which unspooled simultaneously in both the Empire and the Odeon Leicester Square on December 10.  Treading the extended blue carpet were the stars of the film, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore and Laz Alonso, together with composer James Horner and fellow Oscar-winner, producer Jon Landau.  The array of guests eager for an early glimpse of this much-heralded new fantasy-adventure included world champion boxers Joe Calzaghe and David Haye, actor and comedian Simon Pegg, and singers James Blunt and Sophie Ellis Bextor.

ST TRINIAN’S 2: THE LEGEND OF FRITTON’S GOLD

Everyone’s favourite schoolgirls were back in town on Wednesday 9th December when the spirit of academic gynarchy hit the red carpet at the World Premiere of the comic sequel ST TRINIAN’S 2: THE LEGEND OF FRITTON’S GOLD at London’s Empire, Leicester Square.  Rupert Everett, returning as the eponymous headmistress Camilla Fritton, led the invasion with fellow cast members including Talulah Riley, Tamsin Egerton, Gemma Arterton, Celia Imrie, Toby Jones, Jodie Whitaker, Ella Smith, Zawe Ashton, Montserrat Lombard, Cloe and Holly Mackie, Gabriella Wilde and Clara Paget, together with directors Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson.  New cast member Sarah Harding was supported by her Girls Aloud bandmates Nicola Roberts and Kimberly Walsh

NINE WORLD PREMIERE

Hollywood glamour and Broadway glitz came to town on December 3, when the World Premiere of NINE, the musical drama based on Federico Fellini’s classic “8½”, was held at the Odeon, Leicester Square.  Academy Award® winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench and Nicole Kidman joined Oscar® nominees Kate Hudson and director Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) in bringing an impressive display of star power to the dazzling red carpet.

THE LOVELY BONES ROYAL FILM PERFORMANCE AND WORLD PREMIERE

On November 24, it was the Royal film event of the year at London’s Odeon Leicester Square, as their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall braved the elements to join Academy Award® winners Peter Jackson and Susan Sarandon for the Royal Film Performance and World Premiere of THE LOVELY BONES, adapted from the critically acclaimed best-selling novel by Alice Sebold.

Despite the rain, the younger stars of the film took time to sign autographs and pose for photographs with the excited fans. Saoirse Ronan, Rose McIver, Caroline Dando and Reece Ritchie were joined on the carpet by British celebrities including Stephen Fry, Andy Serkis and Chris Eubank, in anticipation of a first glimpse of the eagerly awaited film.  All of the proceeds from the evening benefited the film industry charity The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund.

Tuesday, November 3: Celebrities from across the globe gathered in London to enjoy the start of the festive season, alongside more than 50,000 Londoners who thronged the city’s streets to enjoy the biggest ever co-ordinated Christmas Lights switch on and celebration before the World Premiere of Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ in a Dickensian Christmas – themed Leicester Square.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

On July 7, in the magical surroundings of the Leicester Square gardens the stars of HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE arrived for the world premiere of the eagerly-anticipated sixth instalment in the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Thousands of fans braved the torrential rain and hail to see Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and the rest of the stars on the red carpet which took over the entirety of Leicester Square as well as two of the county’s biggest cinemas-the Odeon and Empire.

Staff and pupils of Hogwarts walked the carpet including Robbie Coltrane, Jim Broadbent, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith and JK Rowling.

On June 25, to celebrate the release of the hotly anticipated blood-drenched epic, Blood The Last Vampire, DDA arranged for warrior half-breed Saya to break through the paving slabs of Leicester Square.

A spectacularly lifelike optical illusion depicting scenes from the Manga-inspired live-action feature BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE was unveiled outside the Empire Leicester Square, by the nationally celebrated 3-D artists Max Lowry and Joseph Hill.

On Thursday 23 April, Disney sensation Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana was joined on the purple and gold carpet, by her on-and-off screen father Billy Ray Cyrus for the UK Premiere of HANNAH MONTANA THE MOVIE. They were met by a legion of screaming fans who had spent all day waiting for their arrival in sunny Leicester Square. Director Peter Chelsom (Serendipity, Shall We Dance) also walked the carpet for one of the biggest premieres of the year.

A team of young dancers in cowboy hats performed the “Hoedown Throwdown”, a dance routine from the movie, outside the cinema, which managed to excite the young fans even more!

On Monday 23rd February, the heroes of the hotly anticipated action film WATCHMEN arrived in London for the World Premiere of Zack Snyder’s mystery adventure. The bright yellow carpet was adnored with not only the gorgeous Malin Akerman and Carla Gugino but their 10 foot tall characters lit up on an avenue of decorated columns ; a first for Leicester Square was the projection of a time lapsed film onto the front of the cinema showing a group of mural artists recreating the campaign poster. Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Goode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earle Haley swapped their hero costumes for slick suits to join the ladies and walk down the fabulously bright carpet.

On Wednesday 21 January, Tom Cruise arrived in London's Leicester Square for the premiere of is new Blockbuster VALKYRIE. The Hollywood legend was joined on the red- carpet by two of Britain's finest talent - Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard.
